What is Vinyl Flooring?

There are two primary categories of vinyl flooring: Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) and Domestic Vinyl. While both products are derived from comparable core materials, their respective methods of construction yield distinctive visual characteristics and functional advantages. Vinyl flooring is composed of multiple layers of technologically advanced materials, resulting in a flooring solution that is not only highly durable and practical but also cost-effective. It faithfully simulates the appearance of natural wood and is predominantly manufactured from polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in conjunction with other polymers.

Vinyl flooring has emerged as a preferred option in contemporary markets due to attributes such as environmental sustainability, affordability, resilience, and minimal maintenance requirements. These qualities render it particularly suitable for use in high-traffic locations across residential, commercial, and industrial contexts.

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) is available in both tile and plank forms, affording consumers access to a wide range of traditional and modern designs that replicate classic tiles or wooden planks. Additionally, LVT can be found in either rigid or flexible forms, thereby accommodating diverse installation needs.

Conversely, Domestic Vinyl is characterized by its fiberglass-cushion backing and is supplied in large, seamless sheets. It is offered in a nearly inexhaustible variety of patterns, encompassing both authentically realistic and creatively distinctive styles. This category remains among the most economically accessible flooring choices for homeowners and is notable for being entirely phthalate-free with very low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) and formaldehyde.

Is Vinyl Flooring Waterproof?

Vinyl flooring is inherently waterproof due to its primary composition of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Nevertheless, the effectiveness of water resistance is significantly influenced by the quality of installation. Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) is available in planks or tiles that are laid adjacent to each other, resulting in multiple seams. Although the individual planks and tiles do not allow water penetration, inadequate installation may permit moisture ingress at the seams. In contrast, Domestic Vinyl is installed in sheet form, reducing the number of seams and consequently minimizing opportunities for water infiltration. Adhering closely to the manufacturer's installation guidelines is essential to ensure optimal performance of both LVT and Domestic Vinyl in environments with high moisture levels, such as bathrooms and kitchens.

How long does Vinyl Flooring last?

The lifespan of vinyl flooring ranges from 5 to 25 years, contingent upon factors such as material quality, proper installation, and ongoing maintenance.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Vinyl Flooring?

Vinyl flooring presents numerous benefits, such as enhanced comfort, quiet operation, resistance to moisture and physical damage, ease of installation and maintenance, affordability, and availability in a wide range of colours and designs. These attributes have contributed to the widespread adoption of vinyl flooring as a sustainable solution.

Nevertheless, certain limitations exist: removal of glued-down vinyl can be challenging, it may sustain dents from heavy furniture, is susceptible to damage from sharp objects, demonstrates poor performance under high temperatures, and is prone to fading due to prolonged exposure to sunlight.

Consequently, vinyl flooring is generally not recommended for rooms with substantial sun exposure. Recent technological advancements have mitigated many of these concerns in newly developed products.
